  • Bring along a basic first aid kit.
  • Know the dive conditions and be prepared for them, have the right suit for the water temp. and appropriate safety gear, your dive leader and ASC can help you with the planning.
  • Copy your passport and certification card and keep them with you, but separate from the originals.
  • Make sure you check the batteries for your dive light and computer before your trip and replace them if necessary.
  • If you haven’t already done so, apply for your dive insurance or make sure your policy is up to date. Carry your dive insurance card with you in case of emergency.
  • Consider purchasing travel and equipment insurance before your trip.
  • Make sure that you have serviced your equipment within the past year and all is working properly.
  • Check over your equipment carefully, including your mask and fin straps for wear and tear.
  • Don’t push your comfort zone when diving. If you haven’t been diving for awhile, make your first few dives easy and enjoyable ones.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol before diving.
  • Log your dives the same day you dive them. You will forget information you will want to remember if you don’t!.
  • Make sure to carry a surface signallying device and whistle as part of your kit.
  • Before your dives, figure out how much weight you will need. Don’t use more weight than you need.
  • Especially for wreck diving, make sure you bring/wear a set of dive gloves.
  • Keep up to date on all things scuba diving. Subscribe to a good dive magazine.
  • Always rinse your gear in fresh water after diving and don’t forget to put the dust cap on your first stage.
  • Never dive alone unless you’re solo-certified and highly experienced. If you are traveling alone, be honest about your diving ability and ask for help in finding a buddy to match your experience and comfort level.

Most of all have fun! And remember, good divers are always learning!
