Summer, 2003, St. Lawrence Seaway Trip

Dive Log, Continued

The first day of diving was to be on the US side of the seaway. Our departure was from Rockport, about 30 minutes to the south. Our goal was to dive the Kingstrom and the America. The Kingstrom is the signature wreck of 1000 Islands region. In order to dive in US waters we had to get through immigration -- pleasantly located on an island, next to a castle! We achieved our goal and spent 2 dives on this fully intact wreck. That set the tone for the rest of the trip -- how could this get any better?

For the next two days we dove out of Brockville and where treated to a 9 AM departure and 20 to 30 minute boat rides. We where able to dive wrecks such as the Lilly Parsons, J.B. King, Gaskin, Jodery, Muscallonge and the Daryaw. In addition, the crew made lunch for the group each day while anchored at a great little island that allowed for swimming or just napping on shore.

We couldn't have asked for better weather, cloudless skies, virtually no humidity and air temperatures in the low 80s.

Each wreck we dove (some more than once) where amazing! Many wooden ships from the late 19th century where still intact. In addition, most of these wreck where rich in artifacts due to the fact that they are all protected by law. No diver may remove anything from these sites.

The dives were fantastic. The visibility was no less than 40 feet. Since this is a river (fresh) the water temperature was a 72 degrees top to bottom; no thermolcline this time of the year. It's hard to believe, but the St. Lawrence Seaway can reach temperatures of high 70s all the way down to freezing. (This past winter the river froze side to side, the first time in 20 years).

Our group included wreck diving veterans as well as newbie divers. In addition, the folks at Seaway Vision where able to accommodate all our divers -- trimix divers and our newly certified wreck divers. Everyone agreed, this is a wreck diving paradise.

Ontario boasts itself as the shore diving capital of Canada. We can attest to that, two of our divers set out each afternoon (that is after diving 3 times a day from the boat) to check out the local hot spots. The smile on their faces said it all.

Overall the trip was fantastic. Our group and crew got along great and everyone has threatened to come back next year. Here is to a hot tub, a bottle of congac and a towel!
